Heartland Emmy for Sandburg Program

Heartland Chapter of NATAS* includes areas of Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Wyoming, and presents annual awards in a variety of categories, including daytime and evening news, weather, and sports programming. “Carl Sandburg: Prayers for the People” received a 2010 Emmy for Entertainment Special Program (that is, not a regular TV feature). The program was conceived and scripted by Dr. Kathryn N. Benzel; Mike Adams was the musical arranger; Dr. Charles Peek prepared oral interpretations. Ted Kooser, former US Poet Laureate also performed in this production, with The Sandtones musical ensemble (Terry Sinnard, Cristina Seaborn, Mike Metzger). Nebraska Educational Telecommunications filmed an April 2008 performance at the Merryman Performing Arts Center and produced an hour-long program that aired first in April 2009. The NET staff included Sue Maryott as producer/director; Ralph Hammack as Editor; Werner Althaus as Audio Sweetening Engineer. The film project was funded by NET and University of Nebraska-Kearney.
